WIR 4/29-5/5

Wednesday 4/29: FOY oriole and Chimney Swift from the yard, then both of those and a Northern Waterthrush at Weston Station Pond.

Thursday 4/30: Arlington Res had more of the same, nothing good in the swallows and Yellow-rumps. Stopped at McClennen too but the rain picked way up.

Friday 5/1: Rock Meadow had RB Grosbeaks and catbirds, duck ponds had nothing exciting. Still had time to run down the parkway for snipe. Didn’t find those but did have a pipit.

Saturday 5/2: Started with a drive by at Horn Pond where the Caspian Terns were cooperative (and a May bird after not getting any last year). Spot Pond next, got rained on a bit but also had 13 new Stoneham birds including FOY Orchard Oriole, Parula, BT Green, and a lateish Common Merganser. Ell Pond had Northern Waterthrush and another Parula plus FOY kingbird but nothing else. Pine Banks Park was fairly dead and a quick look at my targets didn’t offer much hope so went to Fellsmere Pond fairly rapidly. Got DC Cormorant, black duck, and another kingbird there (why were there no swallows?). Afternoon loop of the res had nothing.

Sunday 5/3: Mt. Auburn trip #2. Started with a Hairy and a flyover siskin (#150 for the cemetery!). Brightened up a bit and the warblers came out, mostly Yellow-rump and Black-and-white with a few BT Green, and Parula plus a Palm or two. Then got cold and windy but still ok (BC Night Heron, RB Nuthatches, waxwings up close). Continued to Arnold Arboretum after where I couldn’t find the Worm-eating and got wet and cold. Did find one active tree with more of the same as Mt. Auburn and passed 100 for the year in Suffolk.

Monday 5/4: Dunback had FOY Blue-winged plus a few more warblers, a Broad-wing, Henry’s Elfin, azures, etc.

Tuesday 5/5: Joined NPS staff to walk my survey route at Minuteman. Was good to actually meet them and to discover a couple minor problems along the way. Blue-winged, towhee, turkeys, etc while not particularly paying attention. Went to Millennium after to scan for Broad-wings. No luck (and may have walked past a Worm-eating) but did get a few FOY shorebirds at least.
