WIR 5/6-5/12

Wednesday 5/6: Marsh Wren, Pileated, 9 warblers, tanagers, Wood Thrush, RE Vireos, etc at BBN.

Thursday 5/7: Had to drive into Boston in the morning and had no interest in getting back in the car after.

Friday 5/8: Prospect Hill was fairly quiet, FOY Indigo Buntings, a few warblers, a turkey, and a Pileated.

Saturday 5/9: Had originally thought about Burrage or something for global big day but the weather didn’t look great, so just did some more town listing. Lake Q was quiet, walked the cemetery a bit and did add a couple common things but had zero migrants. Audubon Rd had a couple egrets, Savannah Sparrows, and a bit more, ending up with 5 for Wakefield, just three short of 100. Next stop was Harold Parker State Forest, which just reaches North Reading. Rain picked up a bit here but it was also the busiest part of the day. FOY Louisiana Waterthrush and Magnolia Warbler and a pile of other warblers. Ran to Martin’s Pond next, added Bank and Rough-winged Swallows (and probably should have scoped for more), which meant 16 new ones for the town. Made one more stop at Wilmington Town Forest, which was extremely quiet, only added turkey and Ovenbird. Afternoon loop of the res somehow missed the Bonaparte’s (and martin) and didn’t see the Cliff at Hardy either, but since it was still being reported I walked down Hardy Pond Rd and found that.

Sunday 5/10: No sign of the gull at the res with a bit of a scope (but did add a couple warblers to my res list, probably should have just worked the road more). Continued to McLaughlin Woods where there was no parking, so just doubled back to Hammond Pond. Eventually dug up a couple Yellow-rumps but that was about it. Continued to Chestnut Hill Res, which added a parula, RB Grosbeak, waxwings, and a bit more. Shade St next had a lot of song, mostly Yellow-rumps but also BT Green, BT Blue, Black-and-white, and a dull Scarlet Tanager that had me going for a minute. Looped around Hobbs Brook too, FOY Prairie and a Greater Yellowlegs the most interesting. Fox ran in front of the car on the way home.

Monday 5/11: BBN was very busy, not sure why I didn’t go further. Had 10 warblers right at McLaughlin including FOY Blackburnian and Tennessee plus a BB Cuckoo and a Least Flycatcher. Checked the pond quickly (2 waterthrush on the edge, same shorebirds more or less) and went up the hill. Another Least, a Magnolia, and a message from Lily that there was a Little Blue on the pond. Took a few more steps then decided I should double back down. Didn’t get too far before another message about it taking off came in, so I ran out to the middle of the field and eventually picked it up. It circled a little bit then drifted off, so likely had just dropped in after I went by. Continued around and found another pocket on the way down the hill with Nashville, Prairie, another Least. Veeries and BT Blues in the middle, then a Cape May on the way up to the parking lot. Think that’s 17 species of warbler on the day (and I missed Blackpoll at least).

Tuesday 5/12: Two Yellow-rumps about it at Cookson, not much beyond gulls and cormorants at the square.
